LAW ENFORCEMENT TESTING PROCESS
ENTRY-LEVEL POLICE OFFCER AND POLICE SUPPORT OFFICER CANDIDATES
- All Entry-Level Police Officer and Police Support Officer candidates must register with PublicSafetyTesting.com to schedule a time and date for the written and physical agility exam. Please visit http://www.publicsafetytesting.com for additional information regarding the tests and to schedule an appointment.
- Passing scores from all candidates passing both the written exam and physical agility exam will be forwarded to the City of Lake Stevens.
- A limited number of top scoring candidates from PublicSafetyTesting.com will be invited to a pre-oral board screening. Candidates must pass the pre-oral board screening with a score of 70% or higher. City of Lake Stevens application packets will be mailed to all candidates invited to the pre-oral board screening.
- A limited number of the top scoring candidates from the pre-oral board screening will be invited to a final oral board interview. Candidates must pass the final oral board interview with a score of 70% or higher.
- Candidates passing the final oral board interview will be placed on a ranked eligibility register. Relative rank shall be determined by the combined candidate’s score from PublicSafetyTesting.com, the candidate’s final oral board interview score, plus any additional percentage allowed by law for veterans’ preference.
- When the City has positions open, the hiring authority will start with the top five candidates on the eligibility register to undergo a personal interview with the Chief of Police, a background investigation, polygraph test, physical exam, and physiological examination.

LATERAL-LEVEL (EXPERIENCED) CANDIDATES
Note: An experienced Police Officer is defined as a currently employed, full-time, civilian law enforcement officer with a city, county, state or federal agency who has successfully completed the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission’s Basic Law Enforcement Academy; or has previously worked in that capacity within the last 24 months; or whose prior training qualifies them to attend the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission’s Basic Law Enforcement Equivalency Academy.
- All Lateral (Experienced) candidates must complete a City of Lake Stevens Lateral Police Officer application packet and submit it to the Lake Stevens Police Department.
- All Lateral applications will be reviewed for minimum qualifications and proof of experience.
- Qualifying Lateral applicants will be sent a written exercise to complete. Lateral candidates scoring at least 70% on the written exercise will be invited to an oral board interview. Candidates must pass the oral board interview with a score of 70% or higher.
- Candidates passing the oral board interview will be placed on a ranked eligibility register. Relative rank shall be determined by the combined Lateral candidate’s score received on the written exercise and the oral board interview, plus any additional percentage allowed by law for veterans’ preference.

RESERVE OFFICER CANDIDATES
- All Reserve Officer Candidates must complete a City of Lake Stevens Reserve Officer application packet and submit it to the Lake Stevens Police Department.
- All Reserve Officer Applications will be reviewed for minimum qualifications.
- Qualified Reserve Officer Candidates will be invited to complete a written exam and a physical agility exam. Candidates passing the physical ability exam and scoring at least 70% on the written exam will be invited to an oral board interview. Candidates must pass the oral board interview with a score of 70% or higher.
- Candidates passing the oral board interview will be placed on an eligibility register. Relative rank shall be determined by the combined Reserve Officer Candidate’s score received on the written exercise and the oral board interview, plus any additional percentage allowed by law for veterans’ preference.
