TRAFFIC UNIT

The traffic division consists of two officers (one patrol car officer and one motorcycle officer) who specialize in traffic safety management and enforcement. The motorcycle has been shown to work effectively for high traffic, problem areas because of the high maneuverability and lower detection profile.

The City of Lake Stevens close proximity to a major metropolitan area (City of Everett) creates a high volume of traffic through our city with traffic utilizing SR 9, SR 204 and SR 92. Also within the City of Lake Stevens are several large retail establishments, larger residential areas and many schools.

A primary responsibility of the traffic division is to manage the influence of speed and associated negative factors such as aggressive driving.

Other targeted problems on which the Traffic Division works include school zones, seat belt enforcement, child safety seat enforcement, stop sign/light controlled intersections, pedestrian safety and traffic control device enforcement.

The traffic unit utilizes a Smart Radar Trailer which is placed in noted problem areas in an attempt to educate the motoring public. The Smart Radar Trailer keeps a record of number of vehicles, speed and time of high volume traffic. The traffic unit also respond to and document traffic collisions by use of police reports and Washington State Collision Report Forms.

Although the Traffic Division specializes in the area of traffic they must still maintain a working knowledge of criminal enforcement. Just as patrol handles traffic duties when there is a need or problem, the Traffic Division also assists patrol as needs arise.

If there is a problem area in which you wish to let the Lake Stevens Police Department traffic unit know about, and/or conduct extra traffic patrol emphasis please contact the Lake Stevens Police Department and request the traffic unit.
